Northeastern Metropolitans Bracing for Powerful Nor’easter

New York City and other major northeastern metropolitans are preparing for the arrival of a potent and fast-moving nor’easter that is expected to bring heavy snowfall, power outages, and significant disruptions to travel, work, and school.

Storm Forecast

Early reports indicate that the Northeast has already experienced more than 6 inches of snow, with the heaviest snowfall predicted in southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and southern New England. New York City

New York City is bracing for the largest snowfall in over two years. A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m., with a forecast of 5 to 8 inches of snow expected by 3 p.m. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated during the morning hours, accompanied by gusts of up to 30 mph.

Boston

Boston is under a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m., with a projected snowfall of 3 to 5 inches. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The snow is expected to stop by 6 p.m.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia is under a winter weather advisory until 3 p.m., with expected snowfall of 1 to 4 inches and wind gusts up to 30 mph. A mix of snow and rain is possible, and rain is expected to cease around 2 p.m.

Power Outages

Currently, over 115,000 customers in Pennsylvania are without power. The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds with gusts of up to 40 mph may cause damage to trees and power lines, increasing the risk of additional power outages in the region.

School Closures

New York City Public Schools will be conducting remote classes on Tuesday. Other districts, including those in Boston, Newark, and New Haven, have canceled classes for the day.

Travel Disruptions

Officials are warning of dangerous travel conditions due to the snow and rain. The heaviest snowfall is expected during the morning commute in New York City, while Boston will experience rapidly deteriorating travel conditions throughout the morning and afternoon. Coastal regions, including Long Island and Connecticut, may experience between 2 and 3 feet of flooding during high tide. Strong winds of up to 45 mph are also expected along the coast, with gusts of up to 60 mph in Cape Cod.
