Former President Donald Trump has revealed that his first-day agenda as president will involve pardoning individuals convicted of crimes linked to the January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. This decision is part of his strategy to defend the post-election insurrection that played a role in his GOP primary campaign.

Trump, the GOP nominee-in-waiting, has now stated that he intends to “free” January 6 prisoners as part of his initial actions as president. These actions also include sealing the border and boosting oil and gas production.

“My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!” Trump declared on his Truth Social platform.

Reactions to Trump’s Plans

Opponents of Trump have criticized his stance, accusing him of appealing to lawbreakers. Specifically, individuals who used violence to try to overturn their candidate’s defeat to President Joe Biden.

Sarafina Chitika, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, stated, “Donald Trump has shown he’ll do whatever it takes to hold on to power – including excusing and encouraging political violence.”

Public Reaction and Legal Ramifications

Over 1,300 people have faced charges related to the January 6, 2021, insurrection, with roughly 500 individuals receiving prison sentences. Throughout the Republican primary campaign, Trump frequently highlighted the issues surrounding January 6, as many of his supporters believed the defendants were treated unfairly.

During a CNN town hall in New Hampshire, Trump expressed his inclination to pardon a “large portion” of the January 6 defendants. He noted, “I am inclined to pardon many of them. I can’t say for every single one, because a couple of them, probably they got out of control.”

Democrats have adamantly opposed Trump’s position, asserting that the American people will not allow him to return to the White House due to his perceived role in inciting the events of January 6.

“The American people haven’t forgotten the violent attack at our Capitol on January 6,” Chitika emphasized. “They know Trump is too dangerous to be let anywhere near the Oval Office again.”
