Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized Donald Trump‘s use of the word “hostages” to describe individuals facing federal charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection. Speaking on “Face the Nation,” Pence deemed Trump’s choice of words “unacceptable.”
Pence Disapproves of Labeling Individuals as “Hostages”
During the interview with anchor Margaret Brennan, Pence expressed his disapproval, stating, “I think it’s very unfortunate, at a time when there are American hostages in Gaza, that the president or any other leaders would refer to people in our justice system as ‘hostages.’
Americans Held Hostage in Gaza
In a statement in January, President Joe Biden confirmed the presence of up to six Americans still held hostage in Gaza.
Pence Reflects on Jan. 6 Insurrection
Reflecting on the Jan. 6 attack, Pence highlighted the gravity of the situation. He mentioned, “I was there on Jan. 6. I have no doubt that some individuals were caught up in the moment and entered the Capitol. However, the assaults on police officers and loss of life were tragic.”
Insurrectionists’ Animosity Toward Pence
On that fateful day, insurrectionists directed their anger towards Pence, chanting “hang Mike Pence” outside the Capitol. Trump had previously suggested that the chant was justified.
Pence Declines to Endorse Trump
In a recent announcement, Pence revealed that he will not endorse Trump for president. He cited differences in values and beliefs as the reason for his decision.
Decisive Stand Against Trump
Pence reiterated his stance, stating, “I won’t be endorsing Donald Trump this year. Our administration’s achievements have made America stronger, prosperous, and preserved our fundamental values.”
Pence’s Reasons for Not Endorsing Trump
When questioned further by Brennan, Pence elaborated on his decision not to endorse Trump, citing Trump’s disregard for the Constitution and his stance on critical issues like the sanctity of life and American leadership.
