Protesters at Encampment Raise 3 Palestinian Flags Over Harvard Yard briefly

Harvard Yard Protesters Fly Palestinian Flags Over University Hall

Protest and Flag Raising

On Saturday, at the Harvard Yard encampment, a group of pro-Palestine student protesters raised three Palestinian flags over University Hall. This act occurred despite the flags being a violation of University policy, prompting Harvard University Police officers to call for their removal.

Protest and Confrontation

As the flags were removed, protesters chanted slogans like “Free, free Palestine” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” One protester attempted to grab the flags from the facilities staffer, but was urged to stop by surrounding protesters.

Disciplinary Action

In response to the flag-raising incident, Harvard spokesperson Jonathan L. Swain stated that the individuals involved would face disciplinary action. Later, administrators checked the IDs of protesters and issued warnings of potential consequences, including withholding degrees.

Protesters’ Response

Despite the threat of disciplinary action, protesters continued to rally, chanting and holding a vigil for Palestinians killed in the war. They also called for justice and accountability from Harvard administrators.

Continued Protest and Resistance

Even after administrators left the scene, protesters continued to demonstrate, chanting and following them out of the Yard. The American flag was not flying at the time of the incident, as University procedures dictated its specific schedule for display.

Organizers’ Message

Organizers posted photos of the flags on social media, stating their commitment to raising awareness about the ongoing situation in Palestine. They emphasized the need for Harvard to take action and address Israeli apartheid and occupation.

Campus Response and Support

While some faculty members voiced support for the protesters and condemned anti-Palestinian racism, others chose not to intervene. HUPD Chief Victor A. Clay defended the protesters’ rights to peaceful protest.

Historical Context

This incident is not the first time activists have used the flagpole at Harvard to raise awareness about social issues. In the past, groups have utilized similar tactics to promote causes such as anti-rape culture advocacy.

Continued Advocacy

Despite previous efforts to remove flags and banners, protesters remain committed to their cause. Their continued presence and advocacy serve as a reminder of the ongoing need for social justice and accountability.
